United Nations, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the importance of remembering Mahatma Gandhi’s values during a time of global conflict and division. In his message for International Day of Non-Violence, observed on Gandhi’s birthday, Guterres called for courage, empathy, dignity, and shared humanity, which Gandhi exemplified throughout his life.
He reflected on the pressing challenges faced by the UN and the world, invoking Gandhi’s principles of dialogue and non-violence. Guterres noted the suffering of people worldwide, highlighting the growing disparity between the rich and the poor. He pointed out that the foundations of peace and development—human rights, international law, and diplomacy—are often ignored and violated with impunity.
In this era of rising division, tension, and conflict, Guterres stated that Gandhi’s teachings resonate with a new urgency. He advocated for adopting the peaceful methods developed by Gandhi as an effective means to confront humanity’s challenges.
Guterres remarked, “The best way to combat injustice is not to replicate the cruelty and violence of systemic discrimination and oppression, but to build bridges of understanding through dialogue and non-violence, thereby fostering dignity and lasting change.”
He urged everyone to work towards bridging divides, alleviating suffering, and creating a peaceful world through genuine dialogue and diplomacy. Guterres also highlighted on social media that Gandhi set an inspiring example of how steadfast adherence to the principles of peace can lead to profound and lasting change. In a world marked by increasing stress and conflict, his teachings speak to us with renewed relevance.
The UN General Assembly declared October 2 as International Day of Non-Violence in 2007, following a proposal sponsored by 141 countries.
