India Unveils Design for First Bullet Train on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Corridor

New Delhi, May 18: Indian Railways has officially unveiled the design for the country’s first bullet train, set to operate on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor.

The Ministry of Railways showcased the proposed bullet train’s image at its office in New Delhi. The announcement highlighted that the design is prominently displayed at Gate Number 4.

Earlier in February, Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha that the 508-kilometer-long MAHSR corridor will traverse through Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu.

The corridor will feature 12 stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati.

According to the ministry, the foundation work at eight stations in Gujarat (Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati) has already been completed.

Construction is currently ongoing at Thane, Virar, and Boisar in Maharashtra, while excavation at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) station is nearing completion.

The project has also made significant progress in bridge infrastructure, with the construction of 17 river bridges completed. Work is ongoing on four major bridges over the Narmada, Mahi, Tapi, and Sabarmati rivers in Gujarat, along with four additional river bridges in Maharashtra.

Excavation at the underground BKC station is approximately 91% complete. Additionally, the construction of a 4.8-kilometer sea tunnel between Ghansoli and Shilphata has been finalized.

The MAHSR project is being developed under the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, with the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and Bengaluru-based BEML Limited collaborating to develop train sets capable of achieving a design speed of 280 km/h.

Vaishnaw previously stated that all 1,389.5 hectares of land required for the project have been acquired in accordance with applicable laws.

Compensation has been provided to affected families under state laws and the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation, and Resettlement Act.

The government has coordinated with the Gujarat and Maharashtra administrations to implement rehabilitation and resettlement measures, offering additional benefits and compensation to those impacted.
