New Delhi, April 27: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is set to arrive in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, to lead the Indian delegation at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Defense Ministers Meeting on April 28. This significant international gathering will address various critical issues related to regional security, peace, and cooperation.
During the meeting, India will prominently present its zero-tolerance policy against terrorism. The SCO comprises member nations including India, Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the agenda will focus on strengthening international peace and formulating a collective strategy against terrorism. Additionally, enhancing defense cooperation among member countries will be a key topic of discussion.
Notably, ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States have led to a conflict situation in West Asia, making this meeting even more crucial. Member nations are expected to discuss measures to mitigate the impact of this crisis and maintain regional stability.
Rajnath Singh will reiterate India’s commitment to global peace and clearly outline the country’s zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and extremism. India has consistently maintained that terrorism, in any form, poses a threat to humanity and must be addressed with stringent measures.
During the SCO meeting, the Defense Minister may also engage in bilateral talks with his counterparts from various countries. These discussions are anticipated to further strengthen defense cooperation, enhance strategic partnerships, and delve into issues related to regional security.
The SCO was established on June 15, 2001, in Shanghai, China, and is one of the major political and economic organizations in the Asian region. It includes several key countries, with India becoming a full member in 2017. In 2023, India also assumed the rotating chairmanship of the organization. The upcoming meeting in Bishkek is viewed as a vital opportunity for India to present its strategic vision and bolster international cooperation.
