New Delhi, August 8: India will compete against South Korea in the second round of the Davis Cup Qualifiers on September 18-19. The match will take place on hard courts at the Olympic Tennis Center in Seoul, promising an exciting showdown as both teams vie for a spot in the ‘Final 8’.
The Davis Cup rankings show a narrow gap of just three places between the two teams, with South Korea currently ranked 16th and India at 19th. In their head-to-head record, the Korean team leads 6-5 against India. The Indian team will finalize its roster on August 10 for this crucial match.
The court surface could play a significant role, as South Korean players typically feel more comfortable on hard courts. In 2016, when both teams met in Chandigarh, India opted for grass courts and won the Asia/Oceania Group One match 4-1. However, the upcoming match will be played under entirely different conditions.
India secured its place in the second round with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Netherlands in Bengaluru in February. Southeshwar Suresh excelled by winning both of his singles matches and teaming up with Yuki Bhambri to win the doubles match. In the decisive fifth match, Suresh handled the pressure well, defeating Guy Den Ouden 6-4, 7-6(4) to clinch the victory for India.
This win was particularly significant as it marked India’s first time reaching the second round of the Davis Cup Qualifiers under the current format, which began in 2019.
On the other hand, South Korea pulled off a major upset in the first round by defeating the 2016 champions, Argentina, 3-2 in Busan. Kwon Soon-woo played a pivotal role in this victory, even while serving in the military, helping his team mount a comeback against the formidable South American squad. The match in Seoul has now turned into a do-or-die encounter for a place in the Davis Cup ‘Final 8’. The winning team will advance to the finals scheduled for November.
South Korea has already demonstrated its capability by qualifying for the Davis Cup Finals with 16 teams in 2022 and 2023. Meanwhile, India aims to build on its recent success in the qualifying system and secure a spot among the world’s top eight teams.
