New Delhi, April 2: India has expressed gratitude to the Azerbaijani government for facilitating the safe evacuation of its citizens stranded in Iran through ground border checkpoints.
During a weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that approximately 204 Indian nationals have successfully entered Azerbaijan from Iran.
He noted that several individuals have already returned to India, while others are expected to arrive in the coming days.
Jaiswal said, “Our ambassador in Azerbaijan is present. A total of 204 Indian citizens have successfully exited Iran via ground border checkpoints to Azerbaijan. They will return home, with many having already done so, and the rest expected to return in the next few days.”
He further added, “We are thankful to the Azerbaijani government for assisting in the ground evacuation of Indian citizens from Iran. There is ongoing consultation and regular communication between our two sides.”
On Wednesday, India’s ambassador Abhay Kumar met with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and formally presented a copy of his credentials. The two engaged in meaningful discussions regarding bilateral relations and regional developments.
According to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting reviewed the current state of Azerbaijan-India relations and explored possibilities for further cooperation.
Both parties also exchanged views on the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the Indian ambassador expressed deep gratitude to the Azerbaijani government for its support during the evacuation of Indian citizens from Iran.
Last month, the Ministry of External Affairs indicated that at least 882 Indian nationals, including students, professionals, and pilgrims, had returned home via Azerbaijan and Armenia.
