
Chester-le-Street, July 1: India has set a challenging target of 190 runs for England in the first match of the ongoing T20 series at Riverside Ground on Wednesday. Key contributions came from Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer, despite light rain during the innings.
Winning the toss, the Indian team opted to bat first, but their decision backfired early. In the second over, Sanju Samson (1) was caught by Tom Banton, and Ishan Kishan (0) was run out on the last ball of the over, leaving India at a precarious 6 runs with two wickets down.
From this point, Abhishek Sharma partnered with captain Shreyas Iyer to stabilize the innings. The duo put together a remarkable 82-run partnership for the first wicket in just 38 balls. Abhishek scored 59 runs off 24 balls, hitting 4 sixes and 6 fours, and reached his half-century in just 20 balls.
After Abhishek’s departure, Iyer took charge, adding 36 runs with Tilak Varma for the fourth wicket. Varma scored 13 runs before being dismissed. Iyer then teamed up with Shivam Dube, contributing 41 runs in 25 balls for the fifth wicket, propelling the team towards a formidable score.
Iyer finished with a solid 68 runs off 47 balls, including 1 six and 6 fours, while Dube remained unbeaten on 42 runs from 21 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 2 fours, leading India to a total of 189/7. From the England side, Saqib Mahmood claimed the most wickets, taking 3, while Adil Rashid and Sam Curran each took 1 wicket.
