India Sends Second Batch of Election Support to Nepal

Kathmandu: With Nepal preparing for its general elections scheduled on 5 March 2026, India has provided a second consignment of assistance to support the smooth conduct of the polls. The aid was handed over to the Nepalese government in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance in Kathmandu, in the presence of Finance Minister Rameshor Prasad Khanal.

Dr. Rakesh Pandey, Charge d’Affaires of the Indian Embassy in Nepal, formally delivered over 250 vehicles, including SUVs and double-cabin pickups, as part of this second batch of election-related support. This consignment follows the first batch that was provided on 20 January 2026, with further deliveries expected in the coming weeks.

The Nepal Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the interim government had requested India’s assistance to ensure adequate resources for the upcoming elections. Finance Minister Khanal expressed gratitude towards the Indian government and people, highlighting the longstanding cooperation and friendly relations between the two nations. He also acknowledged the critical role of India’s support in Nepal’s election preparations.

India’s continued collaboration with Nepal reflects not only the bilateral development partnership across various sectors but also the deep trust and friendship shared by the people of both countries. The Indian Embassy in Nepal posted on the social media platform X that the assistance was a gesture of goodwill responding to Nepal’s appeal for election readiness.

Separately, it is noted that in September 2025, widespread protests known as the Gen-Z movement erupted in Nepal against the then KP Oli government over issues like corruption, unemployment, and inflation. These protests led to the government’s fall amid significant unrest and violence.
