India Reaffirms Commitment to Health Assistance for Tuvalu

Funafuti, April 26: India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margerita, reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to continue health sector cooperation with the South Pacific island nation of Tuvalu on Saturday.

Margerita announced that India will provide dialysis units and marine ambulances to enhance health services in Tuvalu. This assistance is seen as a significant step towards strengthening healthcare facilities in the Polynesian nation.

During his visit, the minister toured the Princess Margaret Hospital in Funafuti, engaging with healthcare workers who are delivering essential services to the community. He emphasized that India and Tuvalu will work together to ensure better health services for the local population.

Earlier, he met with Tuvalu’s Minister of Education and Acting Minister of Health, Hamoa Holona. Both leaders discussed ways to enhance cooperation in the education and health sectors between India and Tuvalu.

On Friday, Margerita held discussions with Tuvalu’s Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Labour, and Trade, Paulson Panapa. They focused on strengthening bilateral development cooperation, particularly in health and climate-resilient infrastructure.

He stated on X that the relationship between India and Tuvalu is based on shared values and mutual commitment, asserting that India will remain a reliable partner in Tuvalu’s developmental journey.

Margerita also met with Tuvalu’s Governor-General, Tofiga Waebulu Falani, to engage in meaningful discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

Additionally, he conferred with Tuvalu’s Minister of Home Affairs, Climate Change, and Environment, Dr. Meina Wakafua Talia, discussing climate resilience, disaster preparedness, sustainable development, and capacity building.

Previously, on April 22, he met with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister, Jotham Napat, and Acting Foreign Minister, Javier Emmanuel Harry, to discuss increasing cooperation in health, capacity building, and climate-resilient infrastructure.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that Pabitra Margerita’s visits to Vanuatu and Tuvalu reflect India’s commitment to strengthening political and developmental ties with Pacific island nations. This trip continues the momentum from the third summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation held in Port Moresby in May 2023.
