Yangon, March 30: India has delivered technical equipment to the Federation of Myanmar Engineering Societies for a detailed assessment of buildings affected by the recent earthquake. This event took place on Monday in Yangon.

According to the Indian Embassy in Yangon, this initiative, funded by the Indian government, reflects New Delhi’s ongoing support to enhance the technical capacity of relevant authorities and organizations involved in the reconstruction efforts in Myanmar.

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted this commitment during a virtual address at the inauguration of the Sarsobekman Literary Center in Yangon earlier this month.

Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, presented the equipment to U Khin Maung Htwe, the president of the Federation of Myanmar Engineering Societies. The ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including U Aung Kyaw Myat, chairman of the Myanmar Engineering Council, U Nyunt Maung San, chairman of the Myanmar Earthquake Committee, and Hla Myo Tun, rector of Yangon Technological University.

Following the ceremony, a demonstration of the equipment and its applications was conducted.

The advanced technical tools provided by India include various specialized instruments for underground investigation, leveling, digital assessment, structural alignment, and testing the strength and quality of concrete. These tools will help identify reinforcement conditions and monitor structural distortions.

The embassy stated that this assistance aims to enhance the capacity for structural assessments and strengthen the restoration and repair efforts for earthquake-affected buildings.

According to the Indian Embassy, the equipment will significantly aid in detailed mapping of damages, assessing building strengths, and making informed decisions for repairs and reconstruction. This will promote long-term rehabilitation and disaster resilience in Myanmar.

On March 4, the three-story Sarsobekman Building, constructed with India’s assistance, was inaugurated in Yangon, with an estimated cost of approximately $3.77 million. This initiative aims to preserve and develop the literary traditions of the people of Myanmar, underscoring India’s continued commitment to supporting socio-economic development in this Southeast Asian nation.
