India Provides Health Assistance to Nauru with Generic Medicines and Medical Supplies

Canberra, July 2: India has extended its support to the small island nation of Nauru, located in the Micronesia region of northeastern Australia, by providing a shipment of generic medicines and medical supplies under the Prime Minister’s Indian Public Medicine Project.

The Indian High Commission in Canberra announced on the social media platform ‘X’, “India is proud to provide generic medicines and medical supplies to Nauru. This demonstrates our commitment under the India-Pacific Island Cooperation Forum (FIPIC) to strengthen healthcare and collaboration in other areas of mutual interest in the Pacific region.”

The High Commission stated, “This assistance reflects our long-standing friendship and partnership with Nauru. It also showcases India’s strong commitment to the Global South, promoting affordable and quality healthcare services, and advancing development through reliable, mutually beneficial partnerships.”

India has been a crucial partner in Nauru’s development, and its assistance is highly appreciated. In the early 1960s, India proposed supporting Nauru’s independence in the United Nations, a move that also received backing from the Soviet Union (USSR). This historical context has fostered a special respect for India in Nauru.

Last November, the Indian High Commissioner met with Nauru’s President in Canberra, reaffirming India’s commitment to providing all possible support for Nauru’s development and enhancing cooperation between the two nations across various sectors.

In August 2025, India and Nauru signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the ‘Cycling for a Stronger Nauru’ project. This initiative, aimed at training athletes and promoting better health through cycling, is being funded by grants from India, further strengthening health sector collaboration between the two nations.

Last year, India also provided solar energy-related equipment and livelihood materials to the people of Nauru, enhancing development cooperation between the two countries.

The Indian High Commission noted on ‘X’, “On behalf of the Government of India, Barefoot College provided practical training for installing and maintaining solar home lighting systems. This is an excellent example of the strong development partnership between India and Nauru.”
