Kolkata, July 30: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to make significant changes within its West Bengal unit ahead of the Durga Puja festival. According to party insiders, these changes are expected to occur at the district, block, and booth levels in October.
The primary aim of this restructuring effort is to strengthen the party’s grassroots framework. There may also be some adjustments within the state committee, particularly as several BJP legislators who recently joined the state cabinet could be relieved of their organizational responsibilities under the party’s ‘one person, one position’ policy. However, this rule may not uniformly apply to all ministers holding organizational roles.
Sources indicate that the upcoming changes will primarily focus on the three tiers of organizational districts, blocks, and booths. A member of the state committee stated, “While there is a possibility of changes within the current state committee, some legislators who have secured positions in the new state cabinet may be freed from organizational duties under the party’s ‘one person, one position’ policy. However, this will not apply to all state ministers who also hold leadership positions.”
Party insiders have hinted that leaders who have faced complaints at the state level in the past two months—especially since the BJP came to power in West Bengal earlier this year—could be removed from their current positions. This move aims to strengthen the organizational structure and eliminate controversial figures from key roles.
It is believed that the state leadership is also considering recommendations for two West Bengal leaders for significant positions within the BJP’s central leadership, including the roles of national vice president and national secretary.
Dilip Ghosh, the former state BJP president and current minister for Panchayat Affairs and Rural Development, has previously served as the national vice president, while Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha has held the position of national secretary. Both leaders have also served as state BJP presidents.
According to party insiders, since the change in government, several grassroots leaders from the Trinamool Congress facing serious corruption allegations have been attempting to join the BJP. However, reports suggest that the state leadership has instructed party workers to prevent ‘undesirable elements’ from entering the party.
A member of the state committee remarked, “The aim of the organizational restructuring is also to include long-time party workers at the grassroots level who can effectively prevent such elements from infiltrating.”
