India Positioned for Sustainable Economic Growth, Emphasizes Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

New Delhi, June 15: India’s Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, stated on Monday that the nation has performed well economically. However, she cautioned that the country’s growth story should not be taken lightly. She emphasized the need for continuous innovation, reforms, and institutional strengthening to maintain long-term growth momentum.

Speaking at the Mindmine Summit 2026, the Finance Minister noted that mere economic growth is insufficient. To ensure sustainable and inclusive development, strong institutions, effective policies, and robust collaborative frameworks are essential.

“I know our country is performing well economically, but we must continuously assess our performance and identify areas needing improvement,” Sitharaman remarked.

She highlighted the importance of enhancing capabilities and efficiency to ensure that the benefits of growth reach all segments of society in such a large and complex economy.

According to her, the global economic environment is constantly evolving, and therefore, India’s policies must be robust and adaptable to changing circumstances.

“We should not assume that progress will happen automatically. Continuous efforts, innovation, and reforms are necessary to maintain the pace of development,” she stated.

The Finance Minister acknowledged that while many sectors have excelled, some still require specific policy support, particularly those related to complex and intermediate products and services.

She urged policymakers to continually explore how long-standing challenges can be addressed through structural reforms, better implementation, or new policies.

“These issues have been discussed for years, and the pressing question now is how they will be resolved moving forward,” she added.

Sitharaman assured that the government is consistently working to address future challenges and adapt policy measures to changing conditions.

Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic, she noted that its effects still influence planning and economic expectations, although there are currently no major disruptions anticipated.

The Finance Minister confirmed that the government will keep a close watch on emerging circumstances and continue to work towards strengthening India‘s long-term growth prospects.

Additionally, she mentioned that the government is preparing for the possibility of a weak monsoon due to the El Niño effect.

“There may be drought-like conditions in some areas, while others could experience excessive rainfall. This remains a concern throughout the year. However, this year, we are preparing for a less favorable monsoon due to El Niño,” she stated.
