New Delhi, June 23: The upcoming India Open competitions in July will be named in honor of two of the most influential figures in Indian shooting and sports administration. The rifle and pistol events will now be known as the ‘Jaspal Rana Memorial India Open Competitions (Rifle/Pistol Events),’ while the shotgun events will be titled ‘Raja Randhir Singh Memorial India Open Competitions (Shotgun Events).’ This announcement was made by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) on Tuesday.
Jaspal Rana, one of the biggest legends in Indian shooting, has inspired a passion for the sport in the country. He has won multiple medals at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, holding an unprecedented record of 15 medals, including 9 golds, making him India’s most successful Commonwealth Games athlete.
His historic gold medal at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima marked the beginning of a remarkable international career, establishing him as one of the finest pistol shooters of his time. Beyond his achievements as an athlete, Rana has played a crucial role as a coach and mentor, training many of India’s top pistol shooters and significantly contributing to the country’s emergence as a global powerhouse in shooting.
On the other hand, Raja Randhir Singh was one of India’s most prestigious shotgun shooters, representing the country in several Olympic Games. He achieved a historic milestone by winning India’s first Asian Games gold in shooting at the 1978 Bangkok Games.
Raja Randhir Singh’s influence extended beyond competitions; he became one of the most respected sports administrators in the global Olympic movement. He has served with distinction in various Indian and international sports bodies and currently leads as the President of the Olympic Council of Asia.
NRAI President Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo stated, “Jaspal Rana and Raja Randhir Singh are two great personalities whose contributions have given a new direction to the development and success of shooting in India. While Jaspal has inspired generations with his achievements as a champion shooter, coach, and mentor, Raja Randhir Singh has left a profound impact as an outstanding athlete and one of the world’s most respected sports administrators. Naming the India Open competitions in their honor is a true tribute to their remarkable legacy and the inspiration they provide to the sports world.”
