Geneva, August 10: The United Nations in Geneva shared images on Sunday of five peacocks gifted by India, showcasing them as the “Photo of the Week.”
The UN Geneva office posted on the social media platform X, stating, “Photo of the Week: Five peacocks from India have arrived at UN Geneva’s Ariana Park. Thanks to India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva. This beautiful gift is linked to India’s national bird and continues a century-old tradition.”
On August 7, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Arindam Bagchi, presented the five peacocks, adorned in the UN colors of blue and white, to UN Geneva’s Director-General, Tatiana Valovaya, during a special ceremony.
Valovaya expressed gratitude to the Indian government for this initiative. According to a statement from India’s Permanent Mission, both Bagchi and Valovaya thanked the management of Bio Parc Geneva for arranging the peacocks and assisting with their initial care. The peacocks will be kept in secure enclosures until they reach adulthood.
Valovaya remarked, “We are very pleased to welcome the five new peacocks. Four are blue, and one is white, representing the traditional colors of the UN. We have created a temporary home for them. They will stay here for the next three months and will then be allowed to roam freely in Ariana Park and enjoy the environment.”
India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva stated that this gift symbolizes India’s partnership with the UN and its commitment to multilateral cooperation.
The mission posted on X, “A vibrant symbol of India’s commitment to multilateral cooperation. India’s Permanent Representative, Arindam Bagchi, presented five peacocks, the national bird of India (Pavo cristatus), to Director-General Tatiana Valovaya, enhancing the biodiversity of UN Geneva. This symbolic gift reflects India’s rich natural heritage, its long-standing partnership with the UN, and its unwavering commitment to multilateral cooperation.”
Peacocks have been an integral part of Ariana Park, the main campus of UN Geneva, for over a century. This marks the second time India has gifted peacocks to UN Geneva; the first was a pair presented in 1981.
The Indian mission stated that this gift enriches the biodiversity of UN Geneva and reflects India’s rich natural heritage and cultural values. The Indian peacock, symbolizing beauty, dignity, and strength, also demonstrates India’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability. This gesture strengthens India’s long-standing partnership with the UN and reiterates its support for international cooperation and the multilateral system.
