Suzhou, May 2: In the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026, India faced a 0-2 defeat against Australia. The match took place on Saturday at Pitch 8 of the Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre. Despite a commendable display of tenacity and aggression from Pamela Conti’s ‘Young Tigresses’, they could not secure a win. Goals from Theodora Mouthis in the 25th minute and an own goal by Abhista Basnet in the 59th minute dashed their hopes.
Australia dominated possession in the first half. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Mouthis scored, giving Australia the lead. An own goal from Basnet in the second half doubled Australia’s advantage. However, India responded positively, creating goal-scoring opportunities and maintaining their team structure throughout the match.
Australia maintained consistent possession early on, attempting to penetrate India’s final third. Despite the pressure, India showcased a strong defensive organization, with goalkeeper Munni particularly alert. She made crucial saves, including a powerful shot from Sakura Leong in the sixth minute, which she expertly stopped.
Australia’s success came in the 25th minute when Claire Corbett intercepted a clearance from Munni and delivered a precise pass to Mouthis inside the box. Without hesitation, Mouthis calmly placed the ball into the bottom right corner. Munni leaped with all her might but could not stop the well-placed shot.
After falling behind, India responded positively. Instead of retreating, they maintained their aggressive approach, looking for opportunities from the flanks. Meanwhile, Australia continued to pose threats from set-pieces. In the 38th minute, Espland and Pearson combined again, but Pearson’s header went just wide of the target.
In the closing moments of the first half, India faced relentless attacks from Australia, but their defense held firm. Corbett had a close-range shot that sailed over the goal in the 40th minute. Moments later, Munni made another fantastic save, denying Mouthis a good chance from Leong’s precise pass. Shortly after, Leong attempted to score from the right side of the box, but her shot went over the bar.
After halftime, India returned with renewed intent, displaying increased pace and a willingness to push more players forward. The ‘Young Tigresses’ aimed to inject momentum into the game early on. In the 52nd minute, Preetika Barman chased a through ball from Zoya and attempted a long-range shot, but it went over the goal.
This surge in aggression was evident. India pressed forward, trying to utilize the flanks to create goal-scoring opportunities. However, they missed some final passes, yet their intent and style of play in the attacking third were commendable.
Australia doubled their lead in the 59th minute in an unfortunate turn for the ‘Young Tigresses’. Abhista, attempting to clear a cross from the left, inadvertently deflected the ball off her knee into the net over Munni.
India quickly responded with a positive play. Captain Julan Nongmaithem surged forward in the 60th minute, testing goalkeeper Dali Gor Burchmore with a low shot. Shortly after, Redima Devi Chingkhambam unleashed a powerful shot from distance, which was saved again by the Australian goalkeeper.
In the 61st minute, Australia came close to scoring a third goal when Corbett’s shot hit the post. The ‘Young Tigresses’ maintained their team structure, balancing their attacking intentions with defensive discipline. In the 67th minute, Australia found the net again through Corbett, who scored with a header from Leong’s cross, but the goal was ruled offside after intervention from the assistant referee.
In the final moments of the match, Australia was content to maintain possession and control the game, while India continued to apply pressure and search for goal-scoring chances. Four minutes of stoppage time were added, and the ‘Young Tigresses’ kept their efforts alive until the final whistle.
