New Delhi, March 26: The Indian government has assured that the supply of petroleum and LPG is completely secure and under control. Officials urged citizens not to be misled by campaigns spreading rumors and misinformation aimed at inciting unnecessary fear.
The Ministry of Petroleum stated that India has a total storage capacity of 74 days, with approximately 60 days of stock currently available. This includes crude oil, petrol, diesel, and strategic reserves, as the country navigates the 27th day of the Middle East crisis. The ministry also confirmed that all retail fuel outlets are adequately stocked.
In an official statement, the government emphasized that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in the country. Each citizen can expect a supply for nearly two months, regardless of global circumstances.
Additionally, crude oil purchases for the next two months have already been secured. The government reassured that India is entirely safe for the coming months, dismissing claims of dwindling reserves as completely false.
While many countries are experiencing rising fuel prices, implementing rationing, and closing petrol pumps, India is not facing such issues. The government noted that panic buying in some areas was triggered by rumors circulating on social media.
To mitigate any potential fuel shortages, oil companies have extended credit to petrol pumps to three days, ensuring operational capital is available.
Despite tensions in the Hormuz Strait, India is currently importing crude oil from over 41 countries, receiving more supply than before. All refineries in the country are operating at over 100% capacity, with supplies secured for the next 60 days.
Regarding LPG, the government confirmed that there is no shortage. Domestic production has increased by 40%, reaching 50 TMT daily, while total demand is approximately 80 TMT. This reduction means that only 30 TMT needs to be imported.
Furthermore, 800 TMT of LPG has already been dispatched to India from countries like the USA, Russia, and Australia, set to arrive at the nation’s 22 import terminals. According to the government, at least one month of LPG supply is fully assured, with continuous arrangements being made.
Oil companies are delivering over 5 million cylinders daily. To combat black marketing, the supply of commercial gas cylinders has been increased by up to 50%.
The government is also promoting piped natural gas (PNG) as a cheaper, safer, and more environmentally friendly option. India produces 92 million cubic meters per month (MMSCM) of gas, while total demand is 191 million cubic meters per month, significantly reducing dependence on imports compared to LPG.
The PNG network has expanded rapidly, growing from 57 areas in 2014 to over 300 today. Domestic PNG connections have surged from 2.5 million to over 15 million.
The government clarified that the push for PNG is not due to a shortage of LPG but rather as a better and more economical alternative. The supply of LPG remains entirely secure.
Officials urged the public to rely solely on official government sources for information related to fuel and gas.
