
Bangkok, March 25: India secured two bronze medals at the Asia Cup Archery Stage 1 tournament on Wednesday. The medals were won in the women’s recurve team and men’s compound team events at the SAT Football Stadium.
The women’s recurve trio of Roma Biswas, Kirti, and Riddhi achieved a remarkable 5-1 victory over Malaysia to secure their podium finish. Earlier, the team had placed third in the qualification round with a total score of 1,915. Roma scored 650 points, Kirti 638, and Riddhi 627.
Their journey included a quarter-final win against Chinese Taipei, where they triumphed 6-2, but they faced a setback in the semi-finals, losing 5-1 to the People’s Republic of China.
India’s second bronze medal came from the men’s compound team, consisting of Rajat Chauhan, Uday Kamboj, and Rishabh Yadav. They narrowly defeated Bhutan 234-232 in a closely contested playoff.
The Indian men’s compound team dominated the qualification phase, finishing at the top with 2,126 points. Rajat Chauhan led the pack with 712 points, followed by Rishabh Yadav with 708 and Uday Kamboj with 706.
Previously, the trio had beaten Chinese Taipei 238-228 in the quarter-finals but fell short against Vietnam in the semi-finals, losing by just one point (234-233).
India remains strong in the medal race across various categories. The mixed team events are scheduled for Thursday, with Indian pairs participating in both recurve and compound competitions.
The country has already secured additional medal opportunities. The women’s compound team, featuring Chikita Taniparthi, Raj Kaur, and Tejal Rajendra Salve, along with the men’s recurve team of Devang Gupta, Sukchan Singh, and Juel Sarkar, have both reached their respective gold medal matches against Kazakhstan on Friday.
In individual events, Tejal Rajendra Salve will compete for a bronze medal in the women’s compound category, while the men’s compound competition will see Indian rivals Prathamesh Jawkar and Uday Kamboj face off. Meanwhile, Riddhi will vie for a bronze medal in the women’s recurve event. However, India will not participate in the men’s recurve individual medal round.
A 16-member Indian team, comprising eight men and eight women, is competing in both recurve and compound disciplines at this continental meet.
