India and Thailand Conduct Joint Military Exercise Maitri in Thailand

New Delhi, August 21: A significant joint military exercise named ‘Maitri’ has commenced between the armed forces of India and Thailand in Thailand. Soldiers from both nations are receiving training in jungle warfare and counter-terrorism operations. The exercise includes training on combating terrorists in forested areas, providing first aid, and safely evacuating injured soldiers. Indian troops are also being trained in Thailand’s traditional martial art, Muay Thai.

Commonly referred to as the “art of eight limbs,” ‘Maitri’ involves soldiers practicing counter-terrorism and insurgency operations in both jungle and semi-urban environments. The troops are learning from each other’s operational experiences and combat techniques. This exercise will run until August 31 and is being held at the Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani, Thailand, with 85 soldiers from both the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army participating.

The Indian contingent is represented by the 9 Gorkha Rifles, while the Thai side includes the 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry Brigade. Training is also being conducted on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in joint operations, providing soldiers with experience in modern technology. Notably, Muay Thai incorporates the coordinated use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins.

This training is enhancing soldiers’ physical capabilities, agility, and close combat skills. It also offers both nations’ troops an opportunity to understand each other’s cultures and military traditions, thereby strengthening mutual trust and friendship. Future phases of the exercise will increase the difficulty level of the training.

The exercise will conclude with a certification drill, where soldiers from both countries will showcase the skills acquired during joint operations. ‘Maitri’ aims to enhance military cooperation, mutual understanding, and coordination between the armed forces of India and Thailand. This exercise is expected to further solidify the longstanding friendly relations between the two nations.

The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Lieutenant General Norathip Poynok, Commander of the 4th Army Area of the Royal Thai Army. The primary objective is to improve coordination and joint operational capabilities between the two forces.
