Ahmedabad, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : The redevelopment of Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad is progressing rapidly, with approximately 85% of the ₹335 crore project now completed. This station is being transformed into a multi-modal transport hub, integrating metro and high-speed rail services to enhance connectivity.
The Western Railway’s initiative aims to improve passenger amenities, facilitate smoother movement, and implement a smart-building system. This infrastructure upgrade is designed to accommodate the increasing number of travelers efficiently.
The revamped station will feature an integrated smart-building system, including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Building Management Systems (BMS). Enhanced security measures will include integrated CCTV surveillance, public address systems, access control, IT networking, and real-time passenger information systems.
The project incorporates 28 lifts and 28 escalators, equipped with Braille facilities, guidance and warning tiles, and directional signage. It will also provide accessible ticket counters, automatic ticket vending machines (ATVMs), and drinking water facilities.
Distinct zones are being created for passenger entry and exit, along with dedicated parking for two-wheelers, cars, and buses, including electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The passenger concourse will feature waiting areas, restrooms, baby care rooms for women and children, commercial spaces, and a cafeteria. Access between the platform and concourse will be facilitated by lifts, stairs, and escalators. Additionally, three foot-over bridges (FOBs) are under construction at both Sabarmati BG and Sabarmati (SBT) stations.
The redevelopment plan includes seven platforms at Sabarmati BG and three at Sabarmati (SBT), with full roofing and proposed skylights to enhance natural lighting. Currently, 19 trains originate from Sabarmati Railway Station, and 22 pass through it, serving over 35,000 passengers daily.
The height of the Sabarmati (SBI) station roof is approximately 20 meters, while the area from the Ahmedabad-side FOB to the Delhi-side FOB spans over 3.2 million square feet. A two-story holding area covering about 86,000 square feet is also being constructed, designed to accommodate up to 10,000 passengers during peak travel times, such as festivals and pilgrimages. This holding area will include seating, drinking water facilities, a refreshment center, and separate restrooms for men, women, and persons with disabilities.
A Rapid Travelers Lounge is also being established at the station, offering passengers a comfortable area with minimal wait times and ground-level assistance.
Environmental considerations are integral to the project, which is being planned as a Green Building certified by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) with a proposed solar power plant of 1,300 kilowatts on-site.
A key aspect of the redevelopment is the connectivity with Sabarmati Metro, AEC Metro, and high-speed rail services, facilitating seamless transfers between different modes of transport. Many components of the project are in the final stages, with significant progress on the eastern part of the main station building. The UTS, PRS, and ticket counters are already operational, and the waiting area has been relocated to the eastern section, where lifts and escalators are functional.
