India and Japan Discuss Enhancing People-to-People Connections and Mutual Interests

Tokyo, May 18: India and Japan engaged in discussions on advancing people-to-people exchanges and other mutual interests on Monday. The talks took place during a meeting between India’s Ambassador to Japan, Nagama Malik, and Japan’s Justice Minister, Hiroshi Hiraguchi.

The Indian Embassy in Japan shared on the social media platform X, “Ambassador Nagama M. Malik met with Justice Minister Hiroshi Hiraguchi. They discussed ways to enhance exchanges between the people of India and Japan, as well as issues of mutual interest, including human resource exchange and cooperation under the India-Japan Action Plan.”

On May 11, India and Japan held the second round of their Economic Security Dialogue in New Delhi, agreeing to deepen cooperation in strategic industrial sectors to enhance supply chain resilience.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X, stating, “Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri co-chaired the second round of India-Japan economic security talks with Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Takehiro Funakoshi and Deputy Minister for International Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Takehiko Matsuo. Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in strategic industrial sectors to strengthen supply chains.”

During the meeting, officials from both countries shared their understanding of the economic security challenges they face, including economic pressures, non-market policies, and methods for increased production alongside their respective economic security policies.

They also discussed issues and requests presented in the Japan-India private sector economic security dialogue, focusing on five priority areas identified in the Japan-India joint statement last August: semiconductors, critical minerals, information and communication technology, clean energy, and pharmaceuticals. According to a statement from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they agreed to further promote solid cooperation between Japan and India, keeping the voice of business in mind.

Both parties also held discussions between the Deputy Foreign Ministers of Japan and India, addressing the situation in the Indo-Pacific region and the Middle East, including the Iran issue. Officials from both countries agreed to collaborate on securing energy and resource supplies and strengthening supply chains for essential goods, given the current circumstances in the Middle East.
