India and Canada Accelerate CEPA Talks Ahead of Modis December Visit, Says Indian High Commissioner
India and Canada are advancing negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement ahead of PM Modis upcoming visit.

New Delhi, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh K. Patnaik, announced on Wednesday that discussions regarding a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Canada are progressing swiftly. Both nations aim to finalize the negotiations before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to Canada in December.
In an interview with a news agency, Patnaik confirmed that the fourth round of CEPA talks has concluded and that discussions are moving at a rapid pace. He expressed optimism that the agreement could be finalized by November, aligning with the commitment made by Prime Minister Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to complete the discussions within a year of their initiation.
Patnaik further indicated that the signing of the trade agreement is expected during Modi’s trip to Canada. He emphasized that the foundation for a robust India-Canada partnership has been reinforced across key sectors, including trade, investment, defense, aerospace, space, agriculture, food, and energy.
Highlighting the significance of the proposed agreement, the Indian High Commissioner noted that CEPA would reduce both tariff and non-tariff barriers, resolve technical trade obstacles, and simplify compliance requirements. This would facilitate smoother operations for businesses in both countries.
He added that the agreement would enhance investment flows, expand trade in services, and ease the movement of people, goods, and capital, significantly boosting bilateral economic relations.
Patnaik also pointed out that Canada could become a long-term supplier of energy, critical minerals, and aerospace products to meet the needs of India’s rapidly growing economy. He mentioned that India’s expanding economy will require an increased supply of resources, technology, and advanced products, including agricultural food products, energy, aerospace and defense equipment, space technology, and artificial intelligence solutions.
He concluded by stating that close economic cooperation between India and Canada could help both nations not only boost trade but also strengthen their broader strategic and economic partnership. He emphasized that a strong connection between countries committed to democratic values, the rule of law, and open economies will create new opportunities for long-term collaboration across various sectors.
