IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for 12 Indian States Over the Next Four Days

New Delhi – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning predicting heavy rainfall across 12 Indian states over the next four days. The alert highlights a significant weather shift, with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds expected to impact several regions in Northeast, Central, and Southern India.

Monsoon Surge to Intensify Across Multiple Regions

According to the IMD, a strong monsoon system is set to bring widespread rainfall activity across key states such as Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh over the next five days. The department forecasts thunderstorms accompanied by wind speeds ranging from 30–50 km/h in parts of Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim.

In addition, South Peninsular India, including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, is likely to experience scattered showers and thunderstorms over the next three to four days. The shift in weather is expected to provide temporary relief from the heatwave conditions in certain northern and central regions.

Northeast India Braces for Intense Rainfall

The IMD has specifically warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh until May 18. Isolated heavy showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds are also forecasted for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during the same period. The weather agency urges local administrations and residents to remain alert and take precautionary measures against potential flooding or disruptions.

Central and Eastern States to Witness Rain and Storm Activity

Meteorological data indicates continued weather activity in East and Central India. Areas in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Odisha are likely to see rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next five days. The IMD attributes this pattern to active weather systems driven by regional pressure zones and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.

The dual effect of rainfall in the east and south and rising heat in the northern plains, including Delhi, is creating a diverse weather scenario across the subcontinent. While parts of the capital city remain under the grip of scorching heat, meteorologists suggest a temporary shift in weather in the coming days.
