Ilya Ivashka Shocks Top Seed Federico Agustin Gomez at Maha Open ATP Challenger

Pune, February 24: Former top-50 player Ilya Ivashka delivered a stunning upset by defeating top seed Federico Agustin Gomez in a hard-fought three-set match at the Maha Open ATP Challenger 75 men’s tennis championship. This thrilling encounter took place on Monday at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex’s Mhalunge Balewadi Tennis Stadium in Pune.

Ivashka dominated the first set, winning 6-1, but Gomez made a strong comeback, taking the second set by the same score. The decisive match went to a tough tiebreaker, where Ivashka maintained his composure to secure a 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(7) victory after a grueling 2 hours and 25 minutes, advancing to the second round.

Japan’s Yuta Shimizu also showcased an impressive performance, defeating Italy’s Lorenzo Carboni in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Britain’s Alastair Gray triumphed in a closely contested match against Poland’s Daniel Michalski, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Croatia’s Duje Ajdukovic moved forward with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Korea’s Shin San-hui. Pranjal Dev was defeated 6-4, 6-2, while Taiwan’s Tung-Lin Wu overcame Digvijay Pratap Singh in the final qualifying round, winning 7-5, 6-4.

Max Kasanikovsky, Masamichi Imamura, Yusuke Takahashi, and Malaysia’s Mitsuki Wei Kang Liong also successfully secured their spots in the main draw as qualifiers.
