New Delhi, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : World Post Day, observed annually on October 9, marks the importance of postal services in fostering communication, finance, and social development across societies. This year, the celebration will kick off National Postal Week, running from October 9 to 15.
The day commemorates the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) on October 9, 1874, when representatives from 22 countries signed a treaty in Bern, Switzerland. This historical moment is recognized every year to emphasize the role of postal services in everyday life and their contributions to global social and economic growth.
The concept of World Post Day was first proposed during the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969. The initiative aims to raise awareness about the significant role that postal services play in enhancing communication and connectivity worldwide.
This year’s theme for World Post Day is “One Postal Network, Infinite Possibilities.” Various programs and events will take place during both World Post Day and National Postal Week, showcasing services ranging from traditional mail to digital logistics, banking, and e-commerce. The day emphasizes the postal network’s vital role in facilitating efficient and cost-effective communication across borders.
India boasts the largest postal network in the world, with its postal services dating back to 1766. The country became a member of the Universal Postal Union on July 1, 1876. Currently, there are 164,999 post offices operating across India, including 15,614 urban and 149,385 rural post offices, along with 810 head post offices, 24,281 sub-post offices, and 13,990 branch post offices.
On average, each post office serves 7,339 people, covering an area of approximately 19.92 square kilometers.
