New Delhi, May 11: Iltija Mufti, daughter of PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, has criticized Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s statement regarding the closure of liquor shops. She expressed that the CM’s remarks seem illogical.
In a post, Iltija Mufti pointed out that the Chief Minister’s potential ‘U-turn’ on the issue of banning liquor shops does not make sense. She questioned Abdullah’s claim that prohibiting alcohol consumption among Hindus is incorrect since their religion does not forbid it. She highlighted that states like Gujarat and Bihar, which have significant Hindu populations, have successfully imposed alcohol bans without any opposition.
While expressing pride in Jammu and Kashmir’s secular credentials, she lamented the Chief Minister’s insensitivity towards the religious sentiments of the majority community.
In response, CM Abdullah stated during a media interaction that he often speaks to journalists on the roadside. He acknowledged that his answers can sometimes be lengthy, but due to time constraints, he may provide responses that are misrepresented by the opposition.
He clarified that liquor shops are intended for individuals whose religious beliefs permit alcohol consumption. Abdullah emphasized that no government in Jammu and Kashmir has fully banned these shops, which does not imply an endorsement of excessive alcohol use.
He further explained that those whose faith allows for alcohol consumption are free to do so. However, he noted that his own religion does not permit it, and he does not wish for people to pursue that path. Consequently, the administration has taken significant steps, including not opening any new liquor shops and ensuring existing ones are not located in areas that might tempt youth. Abdullah accused his political opponents of misusing his statements to cover up their past failures.
