Durban, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : The first Test match between South Africa and Australia is underway at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban. By the end of the first day, Australia had managed to score 187 runs but lost six wickets in the process.
After winning the toss, Australian captain Pat Cummins opted to bat first. However, the start was rocky for the Kangaroos, with Nick Maddinson dismissed for a duck after facing 33 balls. Travis Head also struggled, scoring just 9 runs before falling to Wiaan Mulder. Marnus Labuschagne could not capitalize on a promising start, contributing 37 runs before being bowled by Mulder.
Steve Smith added 25 runs from 53 balls before his dismissal, while Alex Carey was out for 14 runs, caught off the bowling of Anrich Nortje. Beau Webster managed only 4 runs. At 124 runs, Australia found themselves in a precarious position with six wickets down. However, Cummins and Matt Renshaw steadied the innings, forming an unbeaten partnership of 63 runs for the seventh wicket from 140 balls.
Cummins remains at the crease with 33 runs, while Renshaw has scored 46 with the help of three fours. The South African bowlers put in a formidable performance on the first day of the Test. Marco Jansen took two wickets for 35 runs in 16 overs, while Wiaan Mulder also claimed two wickets for 31 runs. Anrich Nortje, returning to the team after three years, secured two wickets for 40 runs in 13.2 overs.
Due to poor light and bad weather, only 65.2 overs were played on the first day. On Day Two, South African bowlers will aim to wrap up the Australian innings quickly, while the Kangaroos hope Renshaw can deliver a substantial score.
