Kolkata, March 18: Humayun Kabir, founder of the Janata Unnayan Party, has asserted that the next Deputy Chief Minister of West Bengal will be a Muslim. This statement comes as the state prepares for its assembly elections.
During a media interaction on Wednesday, Kabir expressed his confidence in securing a seat, stating, “I want to announce that I will win the Rajinagar assembly seat by 80,000 votes and the Nauda seat by 30,000 to 40,000 votes. Later, I will retain one seat and leave the other. It is my personal decision whom I bring along.”
Kabir mentioned that he has registered a party to form a government and intends to lead the Muslim community. He firmly believes that a Muslim will hold the Deputy Chief Minister position in the upcoming assembly.
Initially, it was speculated that Kabir would contest from the Beldanga assembly seat, where a mosque is under construction, a project he proposed. However, during the announcement of some candidates on Wednesday, he confirmed his candidacy for Rajinagar and Nauda.
While revealing his party’s candidates, Kabir stated that he decided to contest from Rajinagar and Nauda to teach the Trinamool Congress a lesson. Notably, he was suspended from the Trinamool Congress shortly after announcing the mosque’s construction, leading to the formation of his own party. Kabir has also made public appeals for alliances with political parties and groups opposing both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress ahead of the elections.
Despite initial discussions with Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), his efforts to forge a broad political coalition have not seen significant progress so far.
