Kolkata, May 5: A significant political shift has occurred in West Bengal’s high-profile Bidhannagar (Salt Lake) assembly seat. Dr. Shardavat Mukherjee, the BJP candidate and a renowned oncologist, has achieved a historic victory over TMC’s veteran leader and minister, Sujit Bose.
According to the Election Commission results, Dr. Mukherjee secured a total of 97,979 votes, defeating Sujit Bose by a substantial margin of 37,330 votes. This outcome is particularly noteworthy as the TMC has dominated this seat for over a decade and a half.
The current form of the Bidhannagar assembly seat (constituency number 116) came into existence in 2011 following the delimitation process in 2008. Previously known as ‘Beligachia East,’ this area was long considered a stronghold of CPI(M) stalwart Subhash Chakraborty, with the Left Front holding sway from 1977 to 2006.
However, the TMC won the seat in a by-election in 2009 and maintained control until 2021. Sujit Bose had established a stronghold by winning four consecutive elections in 2009, 2011, 2016, and 2021, and was aiming for his fifth term in 2026.
This time, the BJP made a strategic move by fielding a professional and respected doctor, Dr. Mukherjee, to contest the seat.
Bidhannagar falls under the Barasat Lok Sabha constituency and represents the aspirations of the state’s urban middle class. Its social structure is distinct from many other regions in Bengal. While ethnic and religious equations dominate in various parts of the state, class-based politics is more influential in Bidhannagar.
The mix of highly educated and affluent areas like Salt Lake, alongside relatively underdeveloped wards like Duttabad, adds complexity to this constituency. The role of Scheduled Caste and middle-class voters has been particularly significant in this election.
