
New Delhi, August 2: Doctors at VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi have achieved a groundbreaking milestone by successfully performing the world’s first robotic surgery on an adult patient suffering from a rare congenital heart defect. This achievement is being hailed as a historic step in the global medical community.
Under the leadership of Dr. Kavita Sharma, the director of the hospital, the team from the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department completed this complex surgery. The operation was led by the department head, Professor (Dr.) Anubhav Gupta. Notably, this type of robotic surgery has never been performed before, further enhancing India’s reputation in the global medical field.
The patient had been grappling with two extremely rare congenital heart conditions. The first was Congenitally Corrected Transposition of the Great Arteries (CCTGA), where the heart’s lower chambers are reversed from their normal position. This condition places additional pressure on the right side of the heart to pump blood throughout the body. The second issue was dextrocardia, where the heart is located on the right side instead of the left. Both conditions had severely compromised the patient’s AV valve and were diminishing heart function.
To tackle this challenging surgery, the doctors first created a 3D image of the patient’s CT scan to fully understand the heart’s complex structure. They then devised a detailed surgical plan.
Typically, robotic heart surgery is performed from the right side of the chest. However, due to the patient’s heart being on the right side, the doctors innovatively adapted the technique to perform the robotic surgery from the left side. This approach was entirely new and marked a first in medical history.
During the surgery, instead of cutting through the chest bone, the doctors utilized small incisions to insert robotic instruments and a high-definition 3D visual system. This enabled them to replace the valve with remarkable precision, resulting in a successful operation.
The advantages of this modern technique are significant. The patient’s chest bone does not need to be cut, leading to reduced pain, minimal blood loss, and a lower risk of infection. Additionally, patients can return to their normal lives much faster than with traditional methods.
Experts believe this achievement is not just a successful surgery but also a testament to the growing capabilities of India’s public hospitals and modern medical technology. It demonstrates that world-class treatment and advanced robotic surgery facilities are available in the country’s government institutions.
This historic success is expected to pave the way for new approaches to treating complex heart diseases in the future. It will also serve as a foundation for new techniques and research for surgeons worldwide.
