Chennai, August 2: The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast light to moderate rain in the western districts of Tamil Nadu over the next six days. Meanwhile, parts of northern Tamil Nadu are expected to experience above-normal temperatures.
This prediction comes as several northern districts have been experiencing heavy rainfall, providing relief from the intense heat of recent days. In Vellore district, where daytime temperatures soared, a sudden downpour at night significantly dropped the temperature, offering much-needed respite.
Neighboring Ranipet district also saw substantial rainfall, with areas like Ranipet, Arakkonam, and Sholingur experiencing heavy showers lasting over two hours. This prolonged rain caused power outages in several areas and reports of waterlogging emerged.
In Kanchipuram district, rainfall was recorded in various locations, including Kanchipuram city, Orikkai, and Sriperumbudur. Water accumulation on roads created difficulties for drivers, slowing down traffic.
Chengalpattu district also experienced heavy rain, particularly in Madurantakam, Karunguzhi, and Mamallapuram, providing significant relief after the hot season. In Kuddalore, where the day was marked by bright sunshine and high temperatures, the weather changed rapidly in the evening. Rainfall occurred between 7 PM and 10 PM, effectively cooling down the area.
Given these conditions, the meteorological department predicts that moderate rain will continue in the districts adjacent to the Western Ghats starting Sunday and lasting for six days. Some areas in northern coastal Tamil Nadu are also expected to receive moderate rainfall.
In Chennai, the weather is likely to remain somewhat unstable, with the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain in the evening or at night. However, daytime temperatures are expected to remain high, potentially reaching around 38 degrees Celsius. The department has also warned of extreme heat during the day in northern Tamil Nadu.
Despite the likelihood of evening or nighttime rain, some areas may see maximum temperatures about three degrees Celsius above normal. Residents are advised to prepare for rapidly changing weather, especially thunderstorms and brief heavy rainfall.
