Shimla, July 11: The historic Banthani Castle in Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, has inaugurated the state’s first state-of-the-art digital museum. Chief Minister Sukhu and Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri jointly launched this innovative facility. Developed at a cost of approximately ₹8.5 crore, the digital museum aims to present Himachal Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage, history, art, and traditions in an engaging manner using modern technology.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that Banthani Castle is a significant historical landmark known to many for years. He recalled that during his school days, the building housed the office of the Director General of Police (DGP). A subsequent meeting chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister led to the decision to preserve this historic structure and transform it into a digital museum dedicated to the history and culture of Himachal Pradesh.
The museum utilizes immersive digital technology, allowing visitors to explore the state’s history, culture, and traditions through modern digital mediums. It showcases Shimla’s colonial heritage, the history of the Kalka-Shimla railway, works by renowned artist Nicholas Roerich, folk art, traditional culture, and various glimpses of the state’s development. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that many young people and tourists would visit and learn about the glorious history of Himachal and Shimla.
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri noted that tourists worldwide often visit museums first to learn about local history and culture. This unique digital museum in Shimla was developed with that mindset. He shared that the museum presents historical events from the era of Mahatma Gandhi, contributions of Dr. Y.S. Parmar, the state’s temples, folk culture, art, and historical heritage through digital means.
He added that this digital museum will not only convey Himachal’s cultural identity to the new generation but also become a major attraction for domestic and international tourists visiting Shimla. The government believes that this initiative will not only provide a new direction for the state’s tourism but also play a crucial role in cultural preservation and promotion of heritage.
