YouTuber Dhruv Rathee Detained by Gurugram Police Ahead of Protest

Gurugram, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was taken into custody by Gurugram police on Saturday morning at his residence. He was on his way to participate in a protest organized by the Cockroach People’s Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

On Friday, Rathee accused the central government of creating a near lockdown situation in Delhi ahead of the demonstration scheduled for October 10. He expressed his concerns about the heavy security measures and transportation restrictions imposed in the capital, which included the closure of metro stations, cancellation of trains, and temporary suspension of mobile internet services in certain areas.

In a video shared on Instagram, Rathee questioned the need for such stringent measures, stating, “How are you guys? I’ve arrived in Delhi, and I’ve seen what our Prime Minister has arranged. Over 50 metro stations have been shut down. Trains have been canceled. Buses are off the roads. They are effectively locking down Delhi because of our protest.” He also noted that social media accounts linked to the BJP claimed that the protest would see very few participants.

Prior to this, Rathee had participated in a protest against the Special Intensive Review (SIR) in Bengaluru. Following that event, a retired IPS officer and former police commissioner of Bengaluru, R. Rao, wrote to the Union Home Secretary on October 9, requesting an investigation into Rathee’s citizenship, visa, and immigration status.

In his letter, Rao mentioned that Rathee took part in a protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru on October 8, where he criticized the Election Commission for its lack of transparency and accountability regarding the SIR process. Rao pointed out that it is believed Rathee holds German citizenship and requested verification of his passport, visa category, purpose of visit to India, authorized duration of stay, and compliance with immigration laws.
