Heavy Rainfall Expected in Tamil Nadu Until May 12

Chennai, May 7: The Tamil Nadu region is set to experience rainfall in the coming days ahead of the monsoon. The Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted heavy rain in several western and southern districts until May 12.

According to the weather department, an atmospheric circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and surrounding areas may intensify rainfall activities across the state. Officials indicated that due to the current weather system, heavy rainfall is expected in several districts, including Nilgiris, Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Dindigul.

The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued alerts for 11 districts where heavy rain is likely in the coming days. Authorities noted that the western districts, particularly hilly and ghat areas, may experience intermittent moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and strong winds.

The weather department further stated that heavy rainfall is anticipated in the districts of Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari over the next two days. Additionally, several parts of southern Tamil Nadu may also see rainfall with thunder.

In its forecast, the meteorological center indicated that from Friday to Monday, heavy rain is likely in the districts of Nilgiris, Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, and Theni.

Apart from the western region, widespread rainfall is also expected in several delta and southern coastal districts. The weather office mentioned that districts such as Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi may experience intense rainfall between Friday and Monday.

Meanwhile, Chennai and its suburban areas are expected to see moderate rainfall with occasional thunderstorms in isolated locations over the next few days. Weather officials indicated that cloud cover is likely to provide some relief from the recent heat and humidity.

The department has advised residents in sensitive and low-lying areas to remain vigilant, as continuous rainfall may lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in certain regions.

The weather department has also urged fishermen and the general public to closely monitor official weather updates and exercise caution during heavy rainfall and storms.
