Mumbai, June 13: In Sikar district of Rajasthan, a sudden change in weather last night brought much-needed relief from the scorching heat. However, the heavy rainfall exposed the inadequacies of the municipal council and district administration’s preparations. The downpour lasted for about an hour, followed by intermittent rain throughout the night, continuing into the early morning with light drizzles.
The rain led to flooding in low-lying areas of Sikar city and nearby towns. Several major roads turned into ponds, causing significant inconvenience for pedestrians and drivers alike. This unexpected rainfall before the monsoon revealed the reality behind the administration’s claims regarding water drainage systems.
Areas such as Nawalgarh Road, Piprali Road, Old Loharu Bus Stand, Bajaj Road, Silver Jubilee Road, Fatehpur Road, the Two Number Dispensary area, and the Roadways Bus Depot experienced severe waterlogging. Commuters struggled for hours to reach their destinations due to the flooded roads. The most critical situation was observed at the Radhakishanpura railway underpass, where water levels rose to about 8 feet, completely severing direct access between the city and Radhakishanpura.
During this time, negligence from the Roadways administration was evident, as approximately 3 feet of water accumulated in the Sikar Roadways Bus Depot area. This caused considerable difficulties for passengers and staff present at the bus stand.
In other low-lying areas of the city, water drainage was not possible for several hours, resulting in water levels remaining at 2 to 3 feet, visibly troubling the local population. However, the drop in temperature due to the rain provided some relief from the extreme heat.
The meteorological department has issued alerts for the coming days, forecasting strong winds and more rain from June 14 to June 16. This presents a challenge for the administration to improve drainage systems and prepare for potential flooding.
