New Delhi, August 25: Heavy rainfall in Delhi-NCR on Tuesday has significantly impacted daily life. For the second consecutive day, intense downpours have led to waterlogging in various areas, causing traffic jams and affecting flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Reports of waterlogging have emerged from key locations including Kushak Road, Rajokri Village, ITO, Copernicus Marg, Connaught Place, and Rajaji Marg. The accumulation of water on the roads has slowed down traffic, creating considerable inconvenience for commuters.
Waterlogging has also been reported near Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, AIIMS, Ashok Road, and close to the Supreme Court. Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding on the flyover loop near AIIMS, resulting in long queues of vehicles.
According to flight tracking platform FlightRadar24, at least 18 flights were canceled at Delhi Airport on Tuesday, while 146 flights experienced delays due to adverse weather conditions.
The previous day, Monday, heavy rain had already brought Delhi-NCR to a standstill. Many areas in Delhi, Gurugram, and Noida were submerged, leaving commuters stuck in traffic for hours.
On Monday, flight operations were severely affected as well, with 26 flights canceled, 15 diverted to other cities, and over 390 flights delayed.
The intense rainfall has pushed the rainfall figures in Delhi above normal levels. By August 24, Safdarjung recorded 246.2 mm of rain instead of the normal 191.1 mm, which is 29% above average. Palam received 227.2 mm, 28% more than usual, while Lodhi Road recorded 233.2 mm, 22% above normal.
In response to the heavy rainfall on Monday, the District Disaster Management Authority directed all corporate offices, government departments, and private educational institutions in Gurugram to implement work-from-home and online classes on Tuesday. This decision was made to prevent further inconvenience for commuters and to avoid traffic congestion on the city’s main roads.
