Chennai, July 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted moderate rainfall with thunderstorms in the districts of Tamil Nadu adjacent to the Western Ghats over the next seven days. A heavy rainfall warning has been issued for parts of the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, and Theni districts this weekend.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, a weak trough has formed over the coastal region of Tamil Nadu. This weather system is expected to bring moderate rainfall with thunderstorms starting from July 29 in the Western Ghats districts. The IMD has indicated that heavy rain may occur in certain areas of the Nilgiris district on July 30.
Additionally, heavy rainfall is predicted in one or two locations in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Theni districts on July 31 and August 1. While this rainfall is considered beneficial for hilly areas, the IMD has also warned that maximum temperatures across most parts of Tamil Nadu will remain significantly above normal.
The IMD reports that on July 29 and 30, maximum temperatures in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry could exceed normal levels by up to 4 degrees Celsius. This will likely result in hot and humid conditions, especially in the plains and coastal districts.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecasted partly cloudy skies for Chennai, with a chance of rain in some areas. However, no significant or widespread rainfall is expected in the capital.
Hot weather conditions are anticipated to persist in the city, with maximum temperatures possibly exceeding 39 degrees Celsius. The weather department has advised residents to take necessary precautions against heat stress, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight during the afternoon.
Residents of hilly districts are particularly urged to keep a close watch on local weather forecasts, as the intensity of rainfall may change in the coming days.
