West Bengal Police Seize Large Cache of Explosives in Nalhati

Kolkata, July 29: West Bengal police reported on Wednesday that a significant quantity of smuggled explosives was recovered from Nalhati in Birbhum district following an overnight operation. The seized materials included ammonium nitrate and gelatin sticks.

The operation commenced late Tuesday night after authorities received information about a large stash of explosives stored in a house in Lakhanamara village, known for its stone quarries.

Upon raiding the residence, police were astonished by the sheer volume of explosives found. Investigators are now looking into whether an organized gang is involved in this case.

A lead investigator stated, “We are also examining if these explosives were stockpiled for local stone quarry operations or if there was a plan for sabotage.”

The search operation continued throughout the night, ultimately uncovering the explosives from a hidden area at the back of the house. In total, 800 kilograms of ammonium nitrate and 12,400 gelatin sticks were confiscated.

Additionally, authorities seized 105 detonators and 36 detonating fuse coils.

Police confirmed that several other items related to the use of explosives were also recovered. Bomb disposal squad members were dispatched to the scene, and the area was cordoned off to prevent any untoward incidents.

The seized explosives were examined and subsequently confiscated.

Initial investigations revealed that the house from which the explosives were recovered had recently been rented out. Police are attempting to locate the tenant, who is currently missing, and are also questioning the property owner.

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the source of the explosives, the supply network, and potential uses. Birbhum district police announced that operations like this will continue under a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards crime to maintain law and order.

Last week, the National Investigation Agency also seized a large quantity of explosives, including 20 bags of ammonium nitrate and several detonators, during a raid in the same Nalhati area, resulting in the arrest of a suspect.
