Beijing, September 3: This year’s 18th storm, Typhoon Saudel, made landfall for the third time on Thursday morning along the coast of Fujian province in eastern China. According to the provincial meteorological observatory, the maximum sustained wind speed near the storm’s center was recorded at 23 meters per second.
The typhoon hit the coast of Zhangpu County in Zhangzhou City around 6:30 AM.
As reported by Xinhua News Agency, Saudel first struck the coast of Zhejiang province on August 28, making landfall twice. The first impact occurred at approximately 8:05 AM, with wind speeds reaching a maximum of 35 meters per second near the center. Shortly after, at around 9:10 AM, the storm made its second landfall at the coast of Wenzhou City in Zhejiang, with maximum wind speeds of 33 meters per second.
In anticipation of the storm, Zhejiang province raised its emergency response level to Level 1 on August 27, the highest alert status. Authorities implemented several measures to ensure that no individuals, ships, or other activities were present at sea.
According to the Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters of Fujian province, by 7 AM on August 28, approximately 247,700 people had been evacuated from high-risk areas to safer locations.
Additionally, over 80,000 emergency personnel and more than 80,000 pieces of equipment were on standby to respond to any situation.
To prepare for the typhoon, Zhejiang conducted extensive risk inspections. More than 4,000 monitoring personnel patrolled over 7,200 potential geological hazard sites more than 19,000 times, while 564 geological experts were dispatched to 73 counties to assist in risk identification.
The National Meteorological Center of China issued a warning regarding the storm on the morning of August 28. According to the meteorological department, the typhoon is expected to move southwest at a speed of 20 to 25 kilometers per hour and gradually weaken.
