Bahraich, September 3: A fierce encounter occurred late last night between police and robbers in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh. During the exchange of gunfire, one robber sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was apprehended, while another managed to escape into the darkness.
The robbers had been active in the Nanpara and Matera areas, committing several thefts in recent days. After executing a robbery, they had been evading police capture. On September 1, these same robbers snatched a mangalsutra from a woman named Gangotri near the Gulalpurwa toll plaza.
Bahraich’s Superintendent of Police, Vishwajeet Srivastava, provided details of the incident, stating, “Around 11 PM on Thursday, a woman was robbed of her mangalsutra on the main road from Matera to Nanpara. She reported that two robbers on a motorcycle carried out the act. Immediately, three teams were dispatched to investigate. Several CCTV footages were reviewed, and one captured an image of a suspect. Based on this, the police were actively searching for them.”
Late at night, a local informant alerted the Matera inspector about two suspects matching the description seen on a motorcycle. Acting on this tip, a joint team from the crime branch and Matera police set up a blockade. An encounter ensued near the Bilwa canal bend on the Matera-Shankarapur Nanpara road. Upon seeing the police, the robbers opened fire. In self-defense, police returned fire, injuring a robber known as Fully, alias Tufan, alias Rakeeb, who was then apprehended. His accomplice, Aslam, escaped into the night.
According to police records, the injured robber has over six serious cases registered against him and was wanted for multiple thefts in the area. Police recovered the stolen mangalsutra, a stolen motorcycle, and a .315 bore pistol from the arrested suspect. He has been sent to a nearby hospital for treatment. Efforts to apprehend the fugitive Aslam are ongoing in the area.
