Heavy Rain Alert for Five Districts in Tamil Nadu, Forecasts Continued Rain for a Week

Chennai, May 21: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for five districts in Tamil Nadu. According to the weather department, this weather system could keep the state and Puducherry unstable for at least the next week.

Weather officials report that an atmospheric trough stretching from the southeastern Arabian Sea to the central Bay of Bengal is influencing conditions, leading to increased rainfall activities in various parts of Tamil Nadu.

The IMD specifically warned of heavy rain in Coimbatore district and its hilly areas, as well as in Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul districts.

Authorities have advised residents in these areas to remain vigilant, especially in sensitive regions prone to flooding, landslides, and traffic disruptions. Nilgiris district often experiences heavy rainfall during such weather systems, and this time is expected to see significant precipitation as well. Similarly, the hilly areas of Coimbatore, Theni, and Dindigul could face local heavy rainfall that may disrupt daily life.

The weather department further indicated that rainfall activities could intensify in other districts of the state on Friday.

Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, and Tiruchirappalli districts are likely to experience heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. Similar weather patterns are expected in Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Erode, and Nilgiris districts.

Officials stated that the atmospheric system is expected to remain active in the coming days, leading to intermittent rain and changing weather across many parts of the state.

This rainfall could provide relief from the intense heat affecting several interior districts. However, some areas may also experience strong winds and brief heavy downpours.

Meanwhile, despite the rainfall activities in other parts of the state, Chennai is likely to continue experiencing hot and humid weather. The weather forecast suggests that the city’s maximum temperature could reach around 40 degrees Celsius. Authorities have urged residents to stay updated on weather conditions and exercise caution, especially in districts with potential heavy rain and strong winds.
