Harpal Singh Cheema Accuses BJP of Undermining Democracy Using ED and CBI

Chandigarh: Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has strongly criticised the central government, alleging that the BJP is attempting to dismantle democracy through agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). His remarks came in the wake of an ED raid in Kolkata.

Speaking to the media on Friday in Chandigarh, Cheema stated, “The entire nation is aware that the BJP is trying to destroy democracy through the ED.” He added that India’s democratic values have been preserved by ancestors for thousands of years, but the BJP is now working to break the federal structure by attempting to seize powers granted to the states. He warned that the people of the country will not tolerate this and that the BJP will face strong opposition.

Addressing the Congress party’s protests against the newly introduced Ghar-Gar Rozgar (जी राम जी) law, Cheema claimed that Congress’s real target is the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He criticised Congress for supporting the BJP-backed policy, which is essentially a rebranding of the MGNREGA scheme. According to him, by endorsing this policy, Congress is aligning with measures harmful to the poor.

On the Punjab Private Open Digital University Policy 2026, Cheema highlighted the government’s focus on new technologies and artificial intelligence. He noted that the cabinet has given approval to the policy, which will enable the establishment of digital universities in Punjab. The initiative is modelled on prominent American universities and aims to be a pioneering step in promoting digital education in India. Punjab is set to become the first state in the country to introduce such a policy.

Cheema further emphasised that the Aam Aadmi Party is known for taking historic and revolutionary decisions in the field of education. He expressed confidence that the new policy will make education more affordable and accessible, allowing students to benefit from cutting-edge technology-based learning.
