Ahmedabad, June 24: The Vasna Barrage, crucial for flood control and water management on the Sabarmati River, has undergone extensive renovations ahead of the monsoon season. Following a dam safety inspection that recommended immediate action, officials completed the repair and replacement of 29 gates in a record time of 35 days.
The Gujarat Water Resources Department reported the installation of 19 new gates and the repair of 10 existing ones, with a total expenditure of ₹10.15 crore. With the completion of this work, water collection at the barrage has resumed.
Constructed in 1976, the Vasna Barrage plays a vital role in managing water flow through Ahmedabad and controlling floodwaters during the monsoon.
During an inspection conducted under the Dam Safety Act in 2025, engineers from the department’s mechanical division recommended the renovation and repair of the barrage gates to ensure long-term safety and operational reliability.
In response to these recommendations, officials completely emptied the barrage on April 17 and commenced the urgent work as directed.
The construction of various gate components was completed over a four-month period, after which installation began once the reservoir was emptied.
The department noted that with the help of five heavy-duty mobile cranes, 19 gates were replaced and 10 others repaired within just 35 days.
A total of 460 metric tons of structural steel was utilized for this project. Civil engineering teams also worked on reinforcing the existing structural components of the barrage.
Officials indicated that such projects typically take four to five months to complete after the structure is emptied. However, the work on the Vasna Barrage was finished in just 35 days, allowing for water to be collected before the onset of the monsoon.
