Gandhinagar, May 30: When true human compassion is displayed, even the hardest hearts can be moved. A touching incident unfolded at the Nadiad District Jail, where a migrant laborer woman gave birth while incarcerated. No family member came to take her home after the delivery. In this delicate moment, the Gujarat Police stepped in as her guardians, showcasing the kindness hidden beneath their khaki uniforms. They went beyond their official duties and personally ensured her safe return to her home in Madhya Pradesh.
Recently, a case was registered in Khambhat town of Anand district under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. In this case, a pregnant migrant woman was made a co-accused along with her husband and brother-in-law in the alleged abduction of a minor girl. Her brother-in-law is accused of kidnapping the minor.
Originally from the Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh, this family had settled in Gujarat in search of daily wage work and better livelihood opportunities.
When the woman was brought to Nadiad District Jail, she was pregnant and accompanied by her two-year-old child. On May 21, she went into labor and was initially taken to Nadiad Civil Hospital, then transferred to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for better care. There, she gave birth to a son.
After her treatment, the woman was returned to Nadiad District Jail with her newborn. She was now living in jail with her two-year-old and four-day-old baby.
Although the local court granted her bail, no family member or relative came forward to secure her release. Her husband and brother-in-law remained in custody, and due to the family’s extreme poverty, she had no place to go.
Struggling alone with two small children, the future looked uncertain for this migrant woman.
In this critical moment, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of Anand and the officials of Nadiad District Jail intervened with empathy and responsibility.
The DLSA provided legal assistance to the woman and urged jail officials to consider her fragile health and the presence of her newborn, facilitating a safe reunion with her family in their native village in Madhya Pradesh.
Under the guidance of Gujarat Police Chief Dr. KLN Rao, the Nadiad District Jail police arranged a special vehicle to transport the woman to her hometown, collaborating with a local charitable organization.
During the long journey to Alirajpur district, two police constables accompanied the woman and her children.
Upon reaching her native village, local police were notified and involved in the process. Ultimately, the woman was safely reunited with her family.
Officials reported that the migrant family expressed deep gratitude to the District Legal Services Authority, Nadiad District Jail, Gujarat Police, and everyone who helped ensure their safe return home.
For the woman, arriving in her village with her newborn and young child was an emotional moment—one that not only strengthened her bond with her family but also rekindled her faith in humanity.
