New Delhi, September 1: The partnership between India and Australia in education, research, innovation, and skill development is set to gain new momentum. The prestigious Western Sydney University has officially announced the establishment of its first campus in Uttar Pradesh.
This campus will be located in Greater Noida and is named ‘Jalsetu’. Once operational, it will significantly reduce the need for local students to travel abroad for international-level education.
On Monday, at an event held at the National Agriculture Science Complex in Delhi, Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, announced the campus in the presence of Uttar Pradesh’s Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay.
Several senior officials from the Uttar Pradesh government and the Greater Noida Authority were also present. Notable attendees included Chief Minister‘s Chief Advisor Avnish Awasthi, Additional Chief Secretary Alok Kumar, ACEO of Greater Noida Authority Saumya Srivastava, and NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey, along with Vice-Chancellor and President of Western Sydney University, Professor George Williams AO.
The proposed campus will be set up in Tower-2 of the Greater Noida Authority office complex, with three floors allocated for the university. The campus is expected to commence operations in December this year.
It is anticipated that the campus will provide youth in Greater Noida and surrounding areas with global-level courses, research, and skill development opportunities. The focus will also be on training youth according to industry needs, creating new employment opportunities.
During the event, Western Sydney University announced plans to broaden its partnerships in India. The university will launch scholarship programs aimed at enhancing collaboration in areas such as women’s empowerment, business, data, innovation, and sustainable development. This initiative aims to provide Indian youth with world-class education, research, and employable skills.
Vice-Chancellor George Williams AO stated that the university’s commitment to India extends beyond education. The goal is to create opportunities that enable young people to make significant contributions to India’s social and economic future.
Premier Chris Minns noted that the campus in Greater Noida will serve as a vital educational bridge between India and Australia. It will allow Indian students to access Western Sydney University’s world-class education right in their home country.
CEO of Greater Noida Authority NG Ravi Kumar also assured university representatives of full cooperation in the establishment and operation of the campus. The collaboration between the university and the authority is expected to promote higher education, research, and industrial activities in the region.
Rather than merely developing an academic institution, the Greater Noida campus will be established as the ‘Jalsetu Center of Excellence’. This center aims to bring together research institutions, government, industry, and local communities to address water security challenges facing Uttar Pradesh and the nation.
Research will focus on critical topics such as groundwater sustainability, river health, sustainable irrigation, and urban water management. Additionally, there will be an emphasis on developing innovations and practical solutions in these areas. This initiative is expected to enhance policies related to water conservation and management. The university has also announced the launch of a Master’s degree program in Sustainable Water Management alongside the campus opening.
Through this program, students will have the opportunity to work with researchers, policymakers, government institutions, banks, and industry experts.
Currently, around 50,000 students are enrolled at Western Sydney University. The university claims to have achieved the third position globally in the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings. Therefore, the opening of its campus in Greater Noida is considered a significant achievement for the higher education sector in Uttar Pradesh.
The establishment of a foreign university campus in Greater Noida will not only provide local students with international education options but is also expected to foster new directions in collaboration between India and Australia in research, technology, innovation, skill development, and industry-based education.
