Lucknow, May 20: Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel emphasized the importance of student welfare, quality improvement, employment-oriented education, and research culture during a review meeting of government and funded colleges affiliated with Jananayak Chandrashekhar University in Ballia. The meeting took place at Jan Bhawan on Wednesday. She urged the implementation of a uniform system for students across all universities and colleges. A comprehensive review of academic, administrative, infrastructural, and student welfare arrangements in these institutions was conducted.
Governor Patel expressed serious concerns regarding the shortcomings found in colleges. She instructed government officials and vice-chancellors to ensure regular inspections and to promptly address any deficiencies. Special attention was given to improving the conditions of hostels for women’s colleges, ensuring the safety of female students, and providing positive guidance. She highlighted the need to empower female students to lead safe and dignified lives, free from the influence of antisocial elements. The governor also directed the formation of committees in universities and colleges where students can openly discuss their issues and receive swift resolutions.
In her address to teachers, the governor stressed that no teacher should engage in actions that could undermine the dignity of their role. She called for punctuality among teachers and emphasized the importance of focusing on the overall development of students. To foster self-reliance among female students, she advocated for the introduction of vocational and employment-oriented courses. Courses in beauty therapy, henna application, GST, bindi manufacturing, accountancy, and millet-based cooking were suggested to empower students for self-employment and job opportunities.
Addressing colleges offering agricultural studies, she urged the promotion of organic farming. Students should be encouraged to practice organic farming on their land, which would not only provide additional income but also promote health and environmental conservation. The governor instructed that the National Education Policy be understood and implemented seriously, allowing students the freedom to choose subjects while providing them with multidimensional and multitasking education.
She stated that alongside their main subjects, students should also learn yoga, painting, and other skills to enhance employment opportunities. The governor emphasized project-based learning, technical education, and curriculum development aligned with industry demands. She also called for regular workshops on various subjects and connecting students with enriching programs offered by other institutions. Where there is a shortage of teachers, online teaching methods should be employed, and collaboration with other institutions should be sought. Additionally, she stressed the need to fill vacant teaching positions promptly and to conduct regular training programs for teachers.
The governor directed that arrangements for clean drinking water be ensured in Anganwadi centers, primary schools, PHCs, CHCs, health centers, and colleges. She mentioned that colleges with unsatisfactory infrastructure should work towards quality improvement following the Gujarat government’s public-private partnership (PPP) model. She urged the integration of students into the ‘Khelo India’ campaign and the promotion of sports activities. Furthermore, she highlighted the need for housing for teachers to be built near colleges and for university and college buildings to have organized and coordinated designs.
All colleges were instructed to maximize the use of the ‘Inflibnet’ and ‘One Nation One Subscription’ schemes, allowing students easy access to national and international books, research papers, and academic materials. The governor also directed all teachers to publish at least two book chapters or research papers annually to promote a culture of research and academic writing, thereby improving the quality of higher education.
