Government Sets Limits on Mobile SIM Cards for Subscribers

New Delhi, August 20: The central government’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a directive to telecom companies, mandating that they do not exceed a maximum limit of nine SIM cards per subscriber. This information was released in an official statement on Thursday.

The circular from the government states that starting August 24, 2026, telecom service providers (TSPs) must implement necessary technical and organizational measures to identify any subscriber wishing to acquire more than the allowed number of mobile connections. These subscribers will be informed that they already possess the maximum permitted number of mobile connections and, therefore, cannot be issued a new mobile connection.

Under these directives, customers will be required to provide information in the Customer Application Form (CAF) regarding the different telecom operators and licensed service areas where they already hold mobile connections.

The DoT’s circular indicates that details of customers who have exceeded the specified limit of mobile connections will be available on the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) developed by the department.

This system has been established to assist telecom operators in identifying customers who have reached the maximum limit of mobile connections under their names. The DIP utilizes customer information gathered from various telecom companies. This data helps telecom providers identify customers who have surpassed the limit of nine SIM cards.

The circular states, “Until telecom service providers implement measures based on the Customer Application Form (CAF) requirements, any mobile connection activated beyond the specified limit will be immediately suspended. This suspension will remain in effect until the issue related to exceeding the mobile connection limit is resolved.”
