New Delhi, August 10: Users of the popular messaging platform WhatsApp, owned by Meta, reported service disruptions on Monday. This technical issue primarily affected the sending and receiving of photos, videos, stickers, GIFs, and other media files. Users from various countries, including India, took to social media and outage tracking platforms to share their experiences.
According to DownDetector, a significant number of users began reporting issues with WhatsApp early Monday morning. The complaints indicated that approximately 41% were related to messaging, 40% to app functionality, and around 13% to notifications.
While users noted that standard text messaging was functioning in many cases, they encountered difficulties when attempting to send multimedia files. Many reported that images appeared in the chat window but were stuck in the uploading process, remaining in a ‘sending’ status for an extended period.
Some users also complained about persistent loading icons when uploading photos and videos, or receiving repeated messages prompting them to retry. Similar issues were reported with sending stickers and GIFs, leading users to believe that the technical glitch was primarily linked to WhatsApp’s multimedia services.
Reports indicated that larger media files were particularly affected. In several instances, these files either failed to upload or took an excessively long time to send.
The problem was not confined to a single country or region. In addition to India, complaints emerged from the UK, France, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Spain, and Colombia. The consistent reports from various countries suggested that this was not a localized network or device issue, but rather a technical disruption at the platform level.
After the outage began, many users attempted to troubleshoot the issue on their own. They restarted their smartphones, switched between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and some even reinstalled the app. However, most users reported that these measures did not resolve the problem, particularly regarding difficulties in sending photos and videos.
DownDetector also noted that there were reports of service disruptions on Sunday. As of the time of writing, neither WhatsApp nor its parent company Meta had issued an official statement regarding this technical issue.
