New Delhi, August 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, highlighting a significant achievement in railway electrification. He noted that while the initiative began in 1925, only 30% of the railway network was electrified over the past 90 years. However, in the last decade, 70% of the electrification work has been completed, marking a historic milestone for the country.
The Prime Minister stated, “You will be surprised to know that railway electrification in our country started in 1925. After 90 years, only 30% of the railway network was electrified.” He emphasized the rapid progress made in the last ten years, which resulted in the completion of the remaining 70% of the network. “30% in 90 years and 70% in 10 years. This reflects the pace of achievement and work culture,” he added.
Modi explained that the extensive electrification of the railways has brought numerous benefits to India. It has reduced dependence on diesel imports, saved foreign currency, and promoted environmental conservation. The increased use of electric trains has made the railways cleaner and more energy-efficient.
Today, India ranks among the countries with the largest electrified railway networks in the world. Approximately 99.6% of the country’s broad gauge railway network has been electrified. India is only behind Switzerland, which boasts 100% electrification, although its rail network is significantly smaller than India’s.
In terms of railway electrification, India has surpassed several major countries. China’s railway network is about 82% electrified, followed by Spain at 67%, Japan at 64%, France at 60%, and the United Kingdom at 39%.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that India is not limited to railway electrification but is rapidly adopting future clean energy technologies. Recently, the country launched its first hydrogen fuel-powered train, marking a new achievement in this sector.
He stated, “India has also stepped into this new area of fuel. The country’s first hydrogen train has started, and I am pleased to say it is the longest and most powerful of its kind.” With a capacity of around 2,600 passengers, this train will showcase the potential of clean fuel-based rail transport. The government believes that hydrogen technology could become an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional diesel trains.
Modi stressed that India’s goal is not just to match the world but to take a leading role in future technologies. The advancements in railway modernization, electrification, and green energy-based transport are significant steps in this direction.
