Government Forms Committee to Investigate CBSEs On-Screen Marking System

New Delhi, June 3: In response to the controversy surrounding the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, the central government has taken significant action. A one-member committee has been established to investigate the procurement of services related to the OSM system.

The committee will be chaired by Radha Chauhan, the Chairperson of the Capacity Building Commission.

According to an office memorandum issued by the Cabinet Secretariat, this committee will examine all aspects related to the procurement of services for the OSM system by CBSE. Radha Chauhan has been granted the authority to seek assistance from officials of various departments and offices as needed. The Capacity Building Commission will provide administrative and secretarial support to the committee.

The government has instructed the committee to complete its investigation and submit a report to the Department of Personnel and Training within one month. As a result, significant conclusions regarding this matter are expected to emerge soon.

Meanwhile, the central government has made another important administrative change within CBSE. Varun Bhardwaj, an officer of the Indian Information Service (IIS) currently serving as Director in the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education, has been appointed as the new Secretary of CBSE. He has been assigned this responsibility on a lateral shift basis under the central deputation system.

Varun Bhardwaj, an officer from the 2008 batch, will serve as the Secretary (Director level) at CBSE. His appointment replaces Himanshu Gupta. According to the order, his tenure will last until September 19, 2027, as part of a five-year joint term under the central staffing plan.

Concerns regarding the On-Screen Marking system have been raised by students, parents, and education experts. In this context, the government has decided to form an investigative committee and implement administrative changes within CBSE to ensure transparency and trust in the evaluation process.
