Google Maps has rolled out a major update by integrating its Gemini AI assistant across all navigation modes. The company has started replacing Google Assistant with Gemini for navigation tasks, marked by a new spark icon that appears on the top right side of the map interface.

The new Gemini integration works seamlessly with driving, walking, cycling, and public transport navigation. When activated, the icon displays four colors before settling on a blue variant, indicating that Gemini is ready to receive voice commands during travel.

Users can still activate the assistant by saying “Hey Google” and can make single or multi-step requests. The routine navigation controls now include commands like “navigate home,” “stop navigating,” “add stop,” “mute guidance,” “avoid tolls,” and “show alternative routes.”

For route information, users can ask questions such as “What’s my next turn?”, “When will I arrive?”, and “What’s the weather like at my destination?” Beyond standard navigation queries, Gemini supports more conversational exchanges that enhance search capabilities.

Users can inquire about vegetarian restaurants along their route or ask about parking availability at their destination. If users decide to visit a suggested location, they can simply say “okay, let’s go there” to command Gemini to set the route. The AI assistant also handles calendar event additions.

On Android devices, Gemini in Maps supports voice commands for making calls and sending text messages. It can also access linked apps and summarize emails. The update includes voice command support for media controls as well.

According to Google, the Gemini integration for Maps navigation will be rolled out to all Android and iOS devices over the coming weeks, making the enhanced AI-powered navigation experience available to all users.
